A short document (Early draft) has been added addressing the topic of “Gygaxian Dungeons” - those labyrinthian mazes filled with treasure and danger. Could a similar concept work in “Under a Hostile Sun” given that combat is not a primary focus, and a key emphasis is on environment?
Yes! In fact it allows the party to strategically explore, controlling their own destiny and deciding how far they want to go, before retreating to a safe room. As players explore, finding these safe rooms will be key to recharging the Opportunity Die.
But what about story wise? What sorts of dungeons would occur in this setting? That document shares eight ideas, falling into three categories - Creature Layers, Abandoned Ruins and Rescue Missions
Shadiversity’s Cogent RPG is worth checking out! And I am part of a community project working to expand it. I am hoping some of the lessons I learned from Hostile Sun will translate. Tomorrow I will be testing a Hostile-Sun-ish Gygaxian Dungeon in the Cogent system. Excited to share the results.
