This is much better. There were a lot of combat rounds where nothing happened when play testing the version where referee rolls dice for opponents. That's no fun. I pulled the player facing rules from other FlexD6 games into Flexpiel to resolve that issue. Now something happens every single roll. Either the opponent takes a wound, the character takes a wound, or both take a wound. Then, it is up to the player to decide if they want to use armor or a shield to block the wound from happening. It makes combat much more consequential and exciting.

I'm going to leave the version where the referee rolls dice out here for those who prefer it. I probably won't keep that version updated as I prefer the new direction.
