Roboden started as a small and simple game jam game on itch.io. It had a web build from day 1.
I decided to make a full game afterward and released it on Steam. The game was not the same anymore: more content, assets, shaders, etc. It couldn’t load as fast on the web anymore.
The time passed, but I was never stopping to wonder whether I could properly update the web version again to make it identical to the Steam version.
Long story short, I managed to make the web archive ~x2 times smaller while keeping the same quality. The game initialization times are improved as well.
And that’s not all. I fixed the long-broken mobile controls, so you can try playing Roboden from your phone (if it’s powerful enough).
So now it’s possible to play the same game on both Steam (desktop) and itch.io (browser). Do you know what could be even better? Having a combined leaderboard!
This update is called Clan Wars for a reason. Whether a player submits their highscore, their results will be labeled as either itch.io or Steam clan.
I recommend you try this game out again. It’s very different from what it used to be.
