Devlog #1: The Beginning

SUIT
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

Hello. This is the first devlog for SUIT, a short game that I have committed myself to making in an attempt to dispel a major creative slump. I'm tired of calling myself a musician or a sound designer or an audio engineer and having it feel like I'm lying through my teeth. I need something to drive me to create and this is going to be that something. Something where I can exercise my love of games, work with music and audio, and have something to look back at and point people towards.

I initially chose the arbitrary end date of January 22nd, 2019 in the hopes that it would be enough to spur me to action. Whether that date will be reached in time remains to be seen, but hopefully committing myself to writing these logs will help me stay on track and get the game finished regardless. I intend to write a log daily if possible.

So what do I have done so far? The other day I dusted off Unity and Wwise, getting both of them updated in preparation for starting a new project. I then had an extended stream of consciousness dictation where I laid out the general foundation of how I want the game to be structured. It'll need some revisiting, but it's where I hit upon many of the core ideas of the game: 4 rooms, 13 items each to examine. A story that links the 4 together. Heavy playing card symbology (which I'm sure has nothing to do with the fact that I'm visiting Las Vegas at the time of writing). Those things, coupled with some simple mechanics and basic UI ideas, should be enough for me to really get going with this.

Setting up this itch.io project was the major event of Day 1. Here's what I plan to accomplish by Day 2:

  • Revisit initial idea file, fill in any areas that might be lacking, then restructure and reorganize the information into a more easily  readable/referable format moving forward.
  • Once information is restructured, examine the general game outline and identify which portions may prove more difficult than the others. Additionally, identify what resources will be required (assets, sounds, music) and determine what can be made on my own versus what I will have to look for in the Unity Store.
  • Draw up a tentative (very tentative) and rough (very rough) timetable for the development of the project.
  • Actually create the Unity and Wwise project files.

The logo is also subject to change most likely. Its basic state right now is good enough. Anyhow, that's the end of this first devlog. I'll hopefully be back tomorrow with the second.
