#public domain #free #art #code
While hard at work on our next game at Salmon Snake, the 5th anniversary of our first game "The Great Voyage" unceremoniously came and went. While not a financially successful release, the game remains dear in my heart as the first major milestone in our hobbyist gamedev careers. Happy birthday TGV!
I have personally always been a great fan of the public domain. Generally I feel that all art should belong to everyone and that everyone should be able to as they please with any ip they want. Ideally I would like all my work to be open source and public domain from the start. Of course this doesn't mesh very well with the capitalist reality we live in. Artists and creators need to eat after all. With this in mind I came up with a compromise: Five years after the launch of each of our games, that game's ip, characters, story, art assets and code would go to public domain. (Provided all the team members are cool with it.)
Now that day has come for our first release - The Great Voyage is in the public domain now.
This includes:
Ip - Do what the hell you want with it
All art assets - Menus, backgrounds and character sprites
Story and characters - Write your own adventures for Memnon de Clere or whatever
Code - Study the Ren'py code and use it/modify it however you like
What is NOT included:
The music - I did not make the music, so I cannot make it public domain. Most of it is free to use anyway and I picked the tracks up from opengameart.org Check the steam page or itch.io page for complete music credits if you wish to find the tracks.
The Great Voyage will remain on sale on all platforms where it's sold right now, if you want to support us.
That's it! Have a good day and thanks for reading!
