Version 2.0 and Catalog Release

You Cannot Go Back Version 2.0 is now out on itch and Catalog!

This game was published as pay-what-you want on itch up until now, here's how things are changing following the update to version 2.0 and the Catalog launch.

  • Version 2.0c with new chambers and High Scores support: only on Catalog.
  • Version 2.0i with new chambers but without High Scores support: available here on itch for any payment amount.
  • The previous Version 1.1 will remain free to download here on itch, same as before.

What's new in version 2 you ask?

  • Five new dungeon chambers, taking the total up to twenty.
  • A re-balancing of many chambers for the updated dungeon difficulty systems.
  • A High Scores table based on dungeon completion time (Catalog only feature).

Full Change Log

  • Separated the dungeon difficulty from the dungeon level.
    • Difficulty starts at 1 and increases at the start of the 2nd and 3rd levels of the dungeon.
    • Difficulty can also increase from spinning The Wheel of Fate.
    • Maximum theoretical difficulty is 6, some dungeon chambers continue to get harder at difficulties beyond 3.
    • An Evil Bell now tolls when the difficulty increases.
  • Set the total number of chambers in the dungeon to be exactly 35, due to the addition of high scores.
  • Added global high score based on completion time (Catalog only).
  • Balance: Reduced the probability of issuing a hint from 65% to 50%
  • Balance: Changed the number of starting lives from 1 to 0 (as there is now another way to gain lives mid-game via the Wheel of Fate).
  • Added wrapping paper, updated intro screen and landscape graphics.
  • Fixed issues with some sound effects continuing to play when restarting the game.
  • Added new sound effects (warning beep, wheel clacker, evil bell, UI "no" sound)
  • New Chambers
    • Memory: Parchments
      • The Greek letter Clue is hidden among other Greek letters on three parchments.
      • Choose the parchment with the Greek letter Clue to proceed.
      • The letter is hidden among 2, 4 or 6 letters at difficulties 1, 2, 3+ respectively.
    • Action: Falling Spike Balls
      • Spiked balls are falling from the celling causing holes in the ground.
      • Quickly move to a safe space in the first and then second columns to escape the chamber.
      • The number of spiked balls which drop at the same time increases with difficulty, and the time between drops decreases.
    • Puzzle: Pattern Matching
      • Match the foreground shape, then the background shape, and finally the orientation of the line to complete the pattern.
      • It gets harder to choose the correct line orientation as the difficulty increases.
    • Puzzle: Maze of Arrows
      • A grid of arrows spin around on the floor before freezing into a maze, follow the path they lay out to find the correct exit.
      • Solve a 3x3 grid at difficulty 1, with the arrows pointing in four directions.
      • Solve a 5x7 grid at difficulty 2, with the arrows pointing in four directions.
      • Solve a 5x7 grid at difficulty 3+, with the arrows pointing in eight directions.
    • Miscellaneous: Wheel of Fate
      • Choose to spin the wheel or to ignore it.
      • There are three wheel designs, the chance of getting each one is affected by the current difficulty.
      • Spinning the wheel can have a number of outcomes
        • An evil wind: Loose a life.
        • An evil bell: The difficulty increases.
        • Skull: Instant death.
        • A good omen: Gain a life.
        • Clue: Be reminded of the password.
        • Shortcut: Lets you skip over a chamber later on in the dungeon.

      • Found only via the Wheel of Fate.
      • Replaces some other chamber.
  • Updates to existing chambers
    • Action: Bomb
      • Added a second bomb at difficulty 3+.
    • Action: Corridor of Blades
      • The saw blade hit box is tweaked.
      • The size and number of blades is tweaked based on difficulty, up to a difficulty of 6.
    • Puzzle: Maths
      • This chamber can no longer grant clues (to prevent it confusingly giving a number clue).
      • The sequence is affected by game difficulty, up to a difficulty of 5.
    • Puzzle: Dark Stepping Stones
      • Repeating the pattern now repeats the audio clue.
      • The speed of the clue upon entering the chamber can increase all the way up to difficulty 5.
    • Puzzle: Maze
      • Three more mazes are added (total now eight).
      • A floor pad is now drawn at the chosen starting point.
      • The correct path now flashes as you are leaving the chamber.
      • The mazes are now ranked by complexity, with more complex mazes more likely at higher difficulty.
      • Clutter objects are now only added to obscure the maze at difficulties 3+.
    • Miscellaneous: Chamber of Chests
      • At difficulty 2, the sad chest only starts frowning after two seconds.
      • At difficulty 3+ the sad chest then also stops frowning after four seconds.
