Here's our first dev log! Our two developers, Bren and Percy, will be attempting to post these daily throughout the game jam. We'll update with what we've each accomplished over the last 24 hours.
Bren:
Once the game jam started, I worked on setting up the Ren'Py project and outlining the story. I had some ideas jotted down ahead of time, but as per the rules, nothing detailed enough that could be implemented. For Ren'Py, I set up methods of pronoun selection for the player, name input, and made placeholders to use in place of the art assets Percy is currently working on. I set up a "debug" section i could jump to from the beginning of the game, so I could quickly test out stuff without messing with code in the actual story script.
Before I left for my shift at work, I was able to draft out some of the opening of the game, and the player's first interaction with the other characters. When I got home, I messed around with individual fonts for each character.
In summary:
Percy:
Before the jam started, I gathered resources and references, to expedite the process once we were allowed to work.
My first goal was to determine the size and proportions needed for the game sprites, then start the sketching progress. Development began on the main three non-protagonist characters, Sam, Grey, and Matthew.
A basic height chart was mocked up, general designs solidified, and thumbnails created to guide the creation process. It was determined that the sprites would be drawn with changeable facial features and clothing (ie, as a separate image).
Between working on the art, I played an equal part in the story outline, and elaborated on the structure laid out by Bren. I also set up organizational tools in the form of Trello and a Discord channel, as well as providing links to relevant dev tools, fonts, tutorials, etc.
By the end of the day, this was the art progress, still in the sketching stages:
