#preview-release #steel-os-3
Hello everyone, I have now made Steel OS 3 Beta 2 Build 2315 available. This build deploys new icons and some minor improvements to the system (more notably the shell) over the previous build (Steel OS 3 Beta 2 Build 2261). I've attached a screenshot and the setup executables (note that as time goes on and this project gets more and more dev builds, this may become a more and more viable source for the builds over just the main screen), if anyone wants them.
I have developed a private release identifying as Steel OS 3 Beta 2 Build 2337, which only brings some shell improvements (to the main menu) and Steel OS 2.51's more appealing close and minimize buttons (they're more appealing to me than 2315's buttons imo), and over both builds a currently unknown build is to introduce a more refined music player and updated calculator shell, among other things. Currently, the list of features in Steel OS 3 is still rather long despite the project being in second beta. I'll likely try to get some more installable programs added to Marketplace, and also patch an issue where the program could be accessed offline.
Another patch that will likely occur prior to RTM is going to be window overlapping patches, which will occur due to most, if not all of the programs developed after Steel OS 2.0/2.3's Mail program (meaning programs like PDF Reader, Marketplace, and installables) being directly based off of Mail with the window code.
If you want to install this build, you have two options: Download the ZIP file (recommended if you do not have access to admin permissions on your system), or download the EXE file and install from that. There's a good chance you'll need Windows 7 or later (XP is not supported, not sure about Vista entirely yet but probably the answer to that is no, which is sad because Windows Vista's my favorite version of Windows), note that I have Linux versions of Steel OS 1.0 and an early build of Steel OS 3, that early build also being available for Mac, but I'm not going to provide said build due to being outdated, I'll likely provide an archive of all pre-release builds on GitHub.
Enjoy this build of Steel OS!
Also, one last thing before I leave to go work on Steel OS: I'll provide copies of some stable full releases later, specifically Steel OS 1.2, 1.2 Server, 2.0, 2.3, and 2.51. I'm throwing Steel OS 1.2 and Steel OS 1.2 Server in here just because despite being out-of-service, they're generally not that bad, so I want to make them available here for historical purposes.
