1.18 - Visual Overhaul, Critters on Tree View, and more!

NeuraQuarium
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Things are going to look a little different around here.

Out with the old
...and in with the new!

Critters' polygonal bodies have been replaced with new sprites that are scaled and shaped by their physical stats.

  • The overall body shape is based on Efficiency (aka streamlining.)
  • The fin size and position is based on Agility
  • The tail size is based on Speed

As a result, Critters will be much more visually diverse, and more importantly, you'll be able to "see" their traits more readily at a glance. Additionally:

  • Eye color no longer changes based on what the Critter looks at -- instead, Critter eyes have a pupil which tracks their vision angle.
  • Eye color, then, is based on the Critter's diet. You can see at a glance if a Critter is a carnivore (red eye with vertical slit pupil,) herbivore (green eye with horizontal lozenge pupil,) or in between.

All these changes come together in probably the most exciting part of this update, which is that the Taxonomy Tree view can now include exemplars of what species looked like when they evolved!

With this feature, you can see the changes your species have undergone since the beginning of their evolution. (Keep in mind you can click on a node in the tree to filter out unrelated Critters if things are too cluttered!)

Trees in your existing saves will not be broken, but they won't display Critters that evolved before this updated code was running.

Additional changes and tweaks in this update:

  • Added an additional preset critter, Sonebkeddus Gigantus
  • Overhauled the suction effect of Gulping jaw type
  • Tweaked the Draining jaw type
