At this point, the codebase for Rogue Shooter Redux (RSR) is 100% original, as I've now rewritten everything, leaving only most of the art, sound, and text untouched. But my failure to contact the original author (Nate Bradley) for official permission / blessing on it has created much legal uncertainty surrounding the project and it's future as these assets remain in use.
So I came to the conclusion early this year that the best path forward for RSR would be to create an original spin-off based solely on my own original code and new original art, sound and lore. To eliminate the last remaining copyright concerns and allow me to finally bring the game to Steam and possibly generate some income to help support my future projects.
However, I don't want to abandon RSR completely before reaching the 1.0 release. So I decided to work on further improving the RSR codebase in preparation for this spin-off, while continuing to release RSR updates. The idea being to basically work on both RSR 1.0 and this new spin-off at the same time.
Since March I've been making good progress, but I'm refactoring the entire code base in preparation for new features, so it's been a huge amount of work. Most of these new features will not be seen in RSR, but it will benefit from core improvements to the codebase. When exactly the next RSR update will drop I don't know yet, but the plan is to finally get RSR 1.0 released this year and have a private beta for the spin-off out before the end of the year too.
