Hello all.
Last night I built a character with this shaggy system I wrote and leveled them up from level 01 to level 10.
To my excitement and surprise, the level system seems to make a lot more sense than I thought it would! The rules and conditions I set in place seem to be conducive to what I want, which is characters scaling near-exponentially as they eventually reach Level 100 as Magical Users.
Currently, this game system is specifically less about the narrative aspects surrounding Magical Girl Aesthetics and more about developing a reliable mechanic basis for the genre that promotes flexibility and creativity, with consistent mechanics that really make characters feel "magical" and powerful against their enemies.
I'll release the full results of this light playtesting sometime in the near future, but essentially, I ultimately decided that during a character's Level Up, instead of giving ability score and emotional value points simultaneously, they would alternate with each level to help slow down the exponential growth factor. I'm considering leaving it up to player discretion which level-up improvements alternate, but this is ideally unable to be changed in the future (odd levels boost abilities, even levels boost emotions, etc).
My immediate to-do list is as follows:
At the time of writing this, I am mourning the loss of my uncle. A month and some days ago my grandfather passed away. Two nights ago his first son, my father's elder brother, my uncle, had passed away after a 10 year battle with cancer. This is an annoying way to start out the new year, but I'll be okay. Sad to say, my project work may be a bit slower than I would like, but I'm taking my time to grieve this year.
