Day 14

Tuesday was board game night for Chris and his friends. What started with a boring gathering being livened up with a sudden game of 'Snap!', game night evolved into 4 friends meeting every week to play a variety of board and card games. Games that used to seem intimidating are now seen as taking the group to the next level, no game is off the table. Apart from that one time they played tag team giant draughts, that didn't fit on the table.

This week though, Chris got a phone call from Tom on Tuesday morning; he couldn't make it tonight. He didn't say exactly what was wrong, but Chris could tell that he was sparing him the description of a more unpleasant illness. Of course, this posed a problem: the group always play four-player games.

“I wouldn't stress it. We'll just use the three-player rules.” Dan's approach to game night was often more about the fun of playing than the actual winning, so his stance was no surprise to Chris.

“But tonight's games don't have three-player rules! Chris fused. “We'd have to change games last minute. Then how would we score on the league table?!”

“Dude, chill! You have tonnes of board games. Anyway, Tom picked these games and he won't even be there, why does it matter? Let's just play for fun, isn't that the whole point?”

“Yes, but a lot of the fun and strategy is derived from keeping a long-term score! Though I suppose it would be unfair tonight…”

“Derived? God, Uni's changed you, mate.”

Chris sighed. Dan didn't appreciate the intricacies of game night's systems. “Alright, we'll all pick some random games together when you both arrive.”
