The character created for this study was themed after the previous one, being a weird clock-robot-thing.
Using Blenders Metarig rigs, I added a skeleton to match the model. This is okay, and could be used for weight painting, but isn't easy to control.
Thankfully, this is a between step that can then be used to generate a more complicated skeleton with inbuilt controls.
This is both incredibly useful and overwhelming in its complexity. Took a while to work out which controls to use, and which to ignore.
For the walk animation, I used an animation reference from The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams.
I used this to make the following walking animation. Little janky, but it's works.
Also made the following idle and waving animations.
