#5 - Non-linear Story Event System

Codename: Apocalypse [Demo]
A browser simulator made in HTML5

Overview on Game System

Codename: Apocalypse simulates a pre-apocalypse world with 2 core gameplay: card battles and story events.

  • In card battles, players can fight against enemies who are somehow causing the apocalypse.
  • In the story events, players can to collect information about the upcoming apocalypse and decide their actions on stopping the apocalypse. To win the game, players have to defeat their enemies with their collected cards in the final battle.

Therefore, the story events play a big role in driving the game progress.

Story Event

To simulating the pre-apocalypse world, the story is not in a fixed timeline. The story events will be encounted randomly in a non-linear way. Therefore, players will experience different set of stories in their unique sequences in every play-through.

There are 4 levels of pre-apocalypse events. Players will have choices to determine their action, which leading to 3 different endings.

We believe that, with the random events and action choices, players can create their own pre-apocalypse story.

UI Layout Design

We have considered a several ways to present the story. We finally decided to present from a first-person perspective instead of pure text to let players feel like they are there, creating the atmosphere of the events with the environment and background music. The text is at bottom to make it more like a cinematic feel.

One Final Word

We are now planning for a Kickstarter campaign. Please follow and support our game if you like our game design idea!
