Week 7 - Witch Boss Battle and Level Polish

A Child's Tale
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

Hi everyone!

This is the last week we have before showcasing our work, so it's been one of the most intense ones. And the week isn't over yet, as we keep tidying everything up for our first showcase!

  • Witch boss battle

This week, Diogo and I were assigned to implement the remaining two bosses. I was in charge of the Witch from Hansel & Gretel's book. While initially I struggled quite a bit with an initial concept, I brainstormed a simple "arena" centered around the witch's cauldron. The idea is that both the witch and player can interact with it to hurt each other, bringing an environmental object to the fight. Behavior-wise, I wanted to have the witch teleport constantly around the level, for the player to always be searching for it actively and moving around.

  • Level Polish & Refactoring

After that, I decided to tackle the changes our levels would require. There were a few levels we still hadn't (re)implemented since our initial feedback, so I had to create those missing ones. Then, I connected to a manager system Diogo prepared so levels can be traversed back and forth, connecting them all at given points. And lastly, we decided to tweak a bit the player's speed, which required playtesting all the levels again and modifying a few portions here and there to ensure they were still possible/fun to complete.

There is still plenty of tweaks/polish/fixes left before our deadline Monday, so work is yet to be over! We will have a build prepared before that day, so you'll get to try our game very soon!
