Week 5 - Attack, Shield and Level Elements

A Child's Tale
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

The very first thing we did this week was decide what we would be keeping in the game moving forward.

The Grappling Gun and Running abilities were dropped; the Wall Jump was kept, with a few adjustments based on the feedback we got from the prototype. The most major one being that now a wall jump will only occur if the player is actively moving against the wall, not just adjacent to it.

Another mechanic that went through some changes was the attack, which now works in eight different directions.

The final player character alteration was the addition of a shield, which had been planned from the start, but only now got the attention it needed. How it works is simple: Any projectile that hits the shield is reflected. This is useful for both combat and puzzles. The shield can only be up for a few moments, and has a slight cool-down, making it a timing challenge. As the attack, it can be pointed in eight directions. It also is just a white rectangle for now.

My other main occupation this week was creating the level elements that we require. Switches, gates, checkpoints, moving platforms, breakable walls, a few more minor components. None of these have a visual component yet, so I won't show them here.
