#changelog #major release #playtesting
After several weeks of playtesting, I've decided to upend the core dice-rolling mechanic from a d20 roll-under to a dice pool system. This game started out because I loved the elegance of Roll Under systems like Into the Odd and Cairn, however the further I went down the path of pursuing usage-dice-for-everything, the more I realized this was at odds with that system.
With usage dice, a roll of 1 means that an item is expended, used up, or broken, and the die is stepped down. (ex: d6 > d4)
With d20 roll-under stat, a roll of 1 is the best you can get!
This inconsistency bothered me but I didn't know how to fix it, until I read 2400. This game has an elegant dice pool mechanic where no matter what dice you're rolling the results are the same:
I adopted a similar approach for Wyrd, and in playtesting I found the rolls were much more dynamic, drove the story forward, and captured everyone's attention. I'm going to keep testing but I feel good about this change, hope you can take a look and let me know your thoughts!
I've run three separate sessions so far with great success!! Thanks so much to everyone who's joined the Wyrd Discord and expressed interest in playing. Wow! Spending your time with a stranger on the internet playing fantasy make 'em ups...words can't express my gratitude.
