What's Taking so Long With The Next Update? The Biggest Update Ever!

I would like to apologize for several months of quiet regarding releases here, last release was about 3 months ago and it's extremely unfortunate. It's been even much longer since a proper dev log. I do tend to focus my posts on sites like Subscribe Star, and trying to post everywhere is well just to be honest a pain especially when it doesn't make sense to just copy and paste a post.

Which is the problem that occurred here on itch, so here's a big update post explaining everything that's been happening since September. And hopefully that will give people here some perspective on why updates have been slow. I'll try to keep things somewhat brief.

Steam Release Delayed!

This is old news now, but it's an important event. Last year we had aim to release Our Apartment on steam, but a discovery was made that the release simply wouldn't be good enough. And meeting expectations is make or break on steam. So rather than risk the future of the project, we decided to delay the release. 

The reason was a lack of progression in the game, which I'm sure players here have noted. No saving, no full story implementation, and despite sim elements with Naomi no visible stats there. Initially I avoided these things to avoid trouble and keep development feasible, adding global stats would require more play testing and add more complexity. But the original concept of the game was to have these "trainer" elements, and it's been presented as such.

So since September we've shifted focus to adding these progression elements. 

What's coming!

A lot of the game has been reworked, and a lot of features added. Here's an outline of what's planned for the release...

  • Trainer Elements! This is the core of why this update has to be so huge. This will affect progression, unlocks, and what things Naomi will wear. Some things may change as we want all content currently available to be playable. But generally, as the system works should remain the same. Things you do affect certain values which will affect certain other values. How this is communicated may change over time.
  • Full Saving! Game progress is now saved, along with outfits and custom outfits! Because of the trainer elements saving was mandatory. But meanwhile outfit saving has been reimplemented, and support for saving multiple preset outfits has also been added. Saving will only be allowed at activity selection (usually evening, sometimes afternoon phase), saving mid story dialogue likely won't be allowed.
  • Act 0- 4, additionally because of the trainer elements tying to story progression, it is ideal the story be included. So we're also working on adding the story up to act 4, but maybe not concluding act 4. The implementation of Act 0 -4 may not be 100% complete but it should be at least functional. This also means the game needs some new 3D locations, some 2D sprites, tutorials and unlocks and such, on it's own this is a big undertaking. The reason for Act 4 specifically is that's when most lewd content unlocks.
  • This also means new side events and activity dialogue!
  • Quickie mode added! Requires save data, loads only unlocked outfits and lewd content.
  • New lewd content! I won't be too specific here for now, some story related, others training related... Blowjobs are involved.
  • Reimplementation of Gropes to sex sim, adding Buffs and Dialogue Choices to sex sim. These are important due to how sex sim will affect stats.
  • Outfit store! Outfit items will not be all unlocked at the start, items are instead bought with "spare cash" earned regularly based on certain stats. 
  • New Outfit Items largely needed for some story events.
  • Many technical changes like asynchronous outfit and scene loading.
  • Further expansion of localization support
  • More!

This hefty list is what we've been working on all this time, and we're close to a release but still have a lot of work to do...

Unexpected dialogue volume!

This ones an error on my part, in short there was more dialogue to implement than i thought, and the process of implementing it needed to be optimized or it would never get done. Last month was largely taken up by this task moving all of our dialogue to a new system more readily compatible with our game. 

As such this release is appearing to have around 60-70k of dialogue, over half of that being main story. This is a major undertaking to try and manage in a short period. 

Now you're caught up!

I actually managed to keep that fairly brief! Hopefully this gives some perspective on why the next update is taking so long. 

Also understand this means some delays for android too as a TON of new assets will need optimization to run on android. I should be able to do it but it will take time. But in the end you'll have one of the most full 3D lewd games experiences available on the platform!

If you're wondering why there aren't any bug fixes, thats related to the above. The issue is most problems with the game right now are because I've been side stepping core game functions that REQUIRE dialogue. This is why Naomi's arousal is so wonky, amoung other issues. She has an entire system that's working with an arm and both legs tied. Player dialogue choices, Gropes, Holds, Buffs, Likes, Dislikes are all crucial functions for Naomi. Rather than keep trying to side step we just need to complete our feature set.
