Update 0.2.0 and Post-Jam plans

Typey Birb
A browser game made in HTML5

Bevy Jam #1 has concluded and Typey Birb placed at #18 overall out of 74 entries.

The game will be preserved in its "jam submission state" under the github release tag `0.1.3` for anyone interested in playing it as it was rated.

While Typey Birb ranked highly for "gameplay" and "originality," it lost a lot of ground in "presentation" and "theme interpretation." I can't do too much about the way I shoehorned the theme in, and it doesn't matter a great deal to me post-jam. However, I'll be working on the game a bit in the future to fix bugs, replace placeholders, and keep it up-to-date with new Bevy releases.

Here's the changelog for the first post-jam update.

  • Replaced placeholder obstacles with slightly-less-placeholder pipes
  • Added a distinct sound when typing a "wrong character."
  • Tweaked the camera
  • Tweaked the UI slightly to make the score more visible
  • Fixed an issue where Hero Birb had a rotational twitch while not moving
  • Added a few more "endings" at various score thresholds
  • Added an idle animation for Hero Birb on the start screen
  • Hero Birb now starts the game at roughly the center of the playfield
  • It's no longer possible for the first few obstacle gaps to be very distant from each other
  • It's now less likely for multiple difficult obstacles to appear in a row
  • Nerfed the maximum speed slightly
  • Added some more words to the word list
