trees 🌳 and boring stuff ugh

i added trees.

also i had to work on a ton of boring stuff like splitting the code into modules, and then unit tests died bc Jest hates ES6 modules, so I had to change Jest config to resurrect the test suite and blahblahblahblah

but heck yeah trees
