It started as an idea of just one alien stuck in the wall... I found a really awesome asset with simple tentacles and antennae and stuck it together with some shapes to make the logo creature in Unity(the game engine).
Then, I stuck the little guy on the other aliens and changed their meshes to match. Changed some of their variables on their code to make them mechanically different slightly.
I ripped out the code from "Where is Joann?" (https://devy-games.itch.io/whereisjoann) on a boss fight that hardly anybody could reach in that game, and created the 'infected snake alien' boss...
Eventually, the mascot character was to be a humanoid. This character plays a key role in the game.
I've taken to calling him, "Kirus", as in "King+Virus". The name being based off of it being like the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophiocordyceps_unilateralis) and a virus like alien simultaneously.

The game has a lot of the core idea of a fps scifi. It still needs a lot of interactions to play with while in the dungeons, maybe more 'sites' to examine.
