#pixel_art
Hello! Ygg here, itch.io encourages dev logs so might as well. This is the first time I’ve made pixel art for a game (that is released). I’ve been studying drawing and other forms of digital art, I guess true first start was making art for a still in progress card game. Maybe adding that sentence will increase dev motivation to finish it… or maybe I’ll do another 5 quick projects. On to this pixel art.
My general process was:
Step 1, pick out a pallet that I will use for the project (not yet confident in my color theory skills so I used a premade 1)
Step 2, Make the rough shape of what I want
Step 3 refine the shape
Step 4 repeat steps 2-3 until happy with the shape
Step 5 Shading, for consistency every thing is shaded as if it is lit from the top left ish
Step 6 As this was a quick project, (Like in the case of the cars) use a color layer to quickly generate some variety I didn’t do this for all assets.
Some take a ways:
I used Aseprite and I am 100% happy with it ^_^, much better than making pixel art in paint -_-. Still using a mouse, but I do have a drawing tablet now. I find my pixel art takes a fair amount of precision work, but I’ll keep practicing.
Will I continue to make all the art for games going forward? (With the exception of in progress games)
A resounding maybe. I’ll try to depending on scope and the art involved.
Will the assets be available on itch to use in other games?
Depends on other interests in play, without making any promises I will endeavor to do so.
Any other questions?
No… I might respond to comments
Next big hurdle to self sufficient development is music and sound effects… And of course, the world of art is much broader than I have delved into.
