For this game, the paradigm of magic is that it's favors done by demons, who are weird hyper-real beings who enter the world through the moon. Wizards bind them by luring them into long conversations until the moon sets and they're stuck here. Then the wizards let the demons ride them for a while, and when they want magic to happen they release a demon who will hang around doing favors until they can get home at moon rise.
This makes wizards powerful (presuming they befriend a sufficiently potent demon) but also vulnerable (they get wounded when they release a demon who's been riding them).
