Worked on the final mid-boss this week although it turned out I had already done much of the development before my two year dev hiatus. Which was a bonus. So mostly just testing the existing logic and deciding on the attacks and behaviour.
But the fairy boss turned out pretty good I think. Usually for the boss trials in FoogRL there’s multiple bosses summoned. A single enemy isn’t usually hard to dispatch so I always make sure there’s a good chance that whilst fighting one enemy another appears around a corner. With the mid-game bosses, however, I really only wanted to summon one to give them some gravitas. To maintain the difficulty I make sure all the mid-bosses summon other enemies themselves. Bit of a cheat but I’m reasonably happy with it.
The fairy mid-boss has a special end-of-turn effect that if there are 1 or less mini-fairies then summon 4 random mini-fairies. There is a bank of 5 mini-fairies each with a different attack style, so this creates the option of maybe killing all the mini-fairies so a new batch is summoned which may be easier for your particular party to ignore/kill.
So that is all 3 mid-boss ‘apprentices’ done! 😻
