I owed this game a bit more of a critical retrospective.
In my previous post, I talked about my thoughts behind the original design. This time, I dive into everything that didn't work as well as I would have liked. I even explore a bit of what might change in a new edition.
The full blog post is here but I'll summarize a bit of it here:
- Rules and objectives not spelled out in enough detail or with enough clarity
- Core game loop too dry
- Needed more player interaction with narrative components, rather than just pushing around +'s and -'s
The lessons from this one are already put into practice in a few other games and still inform the things I'm designing now. There might even be a new version of Paper Birds somewhere on the horizon.
