Should You Change the Begining of Your Game?

Romancing the Sun
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

There are a lot of triple-A developers who make their first level last. (I'm stealing this point from Jacob Geller.) This is a great way to put all of the best mechanics and set pieces in the part of the game that the most people will see.

Problems with changes
This is harder to do with serialized media because it is often made as it comes out. Manga, television, webcomics, and visual novels come out in the order that they are made to prove concept and find an audience. The advantage of this is more varied feedback. A novel written in my lonesome and shone to three people will be very different from one given to beta readers or given to the public.

The strongest example, in my mind, is webcomics. Most webcomics look like shit when they start. Some artists continualy go back and redo the beginning but never stop. They are always improving in skill and the begining can always be made better. It is a pretty balanced approach to redo the begining of a webcomic when it comes time to put them into a book because a book will be sold for money. The added bonus of something printed being something that cannot be changed is also a bonus.

Visual Novels are unique because in most cases there are ways for players to minimize annoyance. It is very easy to skip through text that has already been seen. Changes to the beginning might slip under a player's notice completely if they stick to a later save or players can share later saves.

The benefits to changing the beginning improve consistency in the narrative, show off tricks that were learned later or add things that were sorely needed. A better beginning makes stories more accessible for future and returning players. With a bit of planning and clear communication an audiance can tolerate or even celebrate changes you've made.*

What about our game?
I've thought about changing the beginning of Romancing the Sun because character model-wise Grandma Daisy isn't exactly putting the best foot forward. As I've complained before, Daz is great at making young, white, beautiful women, and any variation from that is less stellar.
A solution I came up with was getting Dawn in the game sooner. Maybe, the audience would be alright with pixalated grandma if they new a shiney Dawn was coming. I -Ray- worried about it. When I brought it up with Bees Knees, she said it seems fine and Dawn gets in the story soon enough.
When I asked about fixing Daisy, she fully endorsed the idea. She thought Kusi was fine but If I was tightening textures, I'd tighten all the loosest ones.

As of now, we are not changing the begining of the game but I have switched out some assets. And we hope older players appreciate it and newer players don't even notice.

Game updates
Chapter 3 of Romancing the Sun is still in its planning phase. The launch of Candied Oblivion has been a huge success as a solo side project.
It is taking a little longer because chapters 3-5 will be very similar in structure and purpose so they are all being planned at once.
I'm going to be updating some of the assets with my idol hands. Well, I guess I already have, I just having posed them.
Check out the new versions of Kusi and Gran Daisy!
