Hello and welcome to the third Devlog of "The Backrooms" !
This week we focused on finishing the prototype and make it fun to play (so be sure to try it out! :D)
Keyboard:
Movement - WASD
Dash - Shift
Attack - Left Mouse Button
Locking Doors - Spacebar
Controller:
Movement - Left Joystick
Dash - Right Shoulder Button
Attack - (Xbox) A (Playstation) X
Locking Doors - Right Trigger Button
We modifed the behaviour of our AI so that it reacts better to the player, the AI will now try to run away and hide from the player.
As you might have read in our previous Devlogs, we also have a "Priest" type NPC, which will attack the player with a prayer every once in a while causing the player to take damage. This damage will take the shape of a reduction of the violence meter effectively setting the player back a slight amount.
When the player breaks one of the light generators, lights in a radius around that generator will break and cause some of the NPC's, which are now in the dark, to panic and make erratic movements instead of running from the player. This makes hunting them down a little easier.
Aside from improving our AI, we also added an unlock mechanic allowing the player access to a new ability once it is high enough.
This new ability allows the player to "phase" through certain walls and take a shortcut to hunt down an NPC.
If the violence meter is depleted the player will die and for now, respawn into the level so he can start the game again.
As mentioned in the last Devlog, we set up all the tasks we have to do in the following weeks, to turn the prototype into a finished game - both on the programming and art side of the game development.
To be ready to start the Production Sprint 1 phase after we get green light by our supervisors, we tested the complete asset-creation-workflow with the example of a desk:
Once we get approval for the prototype, we will enter the Production Sprint 1 and start creating assets and the functionality of the game to make everything look and play nice! :D
Thanks for stopping by and see you next week!
