Dicier, Dicey, and Arcana Lite

Typeface: Dicier
A downloadable typeface

Note: I've now removed both of these fonts from itch, so the links no longer work.

Dicier's based on my older dice font Dicey. It supersedes that font, and it also supersedes another font, a WIP project called Arcana Lite. Or, it will do, when I get round to Dicier's tarot update. Which I will, because I've got a much clearer plan for updating Dicier than I did for finishing Arcana Lite, and the typeface's development is hopefully gonna be a lot more engaged.

Why replace Dicey?

Dicier is (probably) better-designed from a graphical point of view, partly since the original Dicey was made in Fontstruct, a simple, tile-based font design web app, and Dicier is made entirely in Glyphs (and Glyphs Mini), a much more powerful vector-based font design app. Dicier's also more accessible (specifically to people using text-to-speech software) and much more versatile and powerful compared with the dice-only Dicey.

If you're using Dicey and want to keep the same look, there are two font files in the baseline Dicier font family that look pretty similar to the originals:

  • Dicier Round Heavy can replace Dicey Light
  • Dicier Round Dark can replace Dicey Dark

Why replace Arcana Lite?

Arcana Lite never really took off on my end. I just couldn't make the concept work. It's a font of simple icon numerals for the minor arcana cards (except it's swords-only so far and only goes from 1 to 10—no ace or court cards). However, it's too detailed to really work at small font sizes and the simplicity feels like a drawback at larger sizes.

If I was a better vector artist I'd make .svgs of different swords and card values, but for now, I'm gonna take the more reliable route: make minor arcana suit icons that work the same way as the playing card suits in baseline Dicier. Instead of TEN_HEARTS or QUEEN_SPADES you'll type e.g. FIVE_RINGS or ACE_SWORDS and get a similar output.
