The Itch version of the game has not been getting much love, but today it has been updated to match what's on Steam.
There is still no Matchmaking in Itch, as that is specific to Steam works, but the game can be played in multiplayer over Direct IP connections (remember, if not playing over a lan, and behind a router, you need to forward port 31400 to your local IP adress.
So, There have been huge graphical improvements, there are now new weapons (assault rifle, double barrelled shotgun) and a new enemy (the Cowmogorgon).
There is also a Single Player Wave mode that is still very incomplete but fully playable. It requires balancing and UI elements to indicate what wave you are in and to show the timer between waves, but apart from that, it's something to play if and when you can't play with friends.
