Game Jam Release Postmortem
Since the game has stopped development, I would like to share what I have achieved and what I have failed to achieve with this project. This game was made with the sole purpose of competing in the Beginners Circle Game Jam #3 hosted by angrysmile. The rules for this jam stated that I had to create every asset except for music and fonts.
What I had achieved:
- I completed (sort-of) my first game! This was a huge success for me since I had always left games unplayable and unfinished in the past.
- I learned a lot more C#. I am a first year Computer Science major who has programming experience in Python, JavaScript, Racket, (NEVER LEARN RACKET) and within this past week, Java. I can now say that I know the basics of C# for Unity as well!
- I learned how to make basic textures in Gimp. I was never good at art, which is why the game does not really look too great. These textures are really basic, but they work.
What I had failed to achieve:
- Music. I learned some music theory for this jam, but I did not have enough time to figure out how to make a song after I finished the game.
- Sound Effects. I still have no clue how sound effects work or how to make them.
- Animation. I have no idea how 3d and 2d animation works.
- 3D Modeling. I did all of my modeling in the Unity editor with spheres, cylinders, and boxes.
- 2D Art and Textures. Although I learned a lot about textures, they were not good at all. The HUD looks hand drawn, which is not a look that complemented the game.
- Probably a lot more, but I will not nitpick my game more than I already had.
This game jam was really good for me. It helped me learn a lot more about game development and expose my weaknesses. In the near future I will attempt to learn art and sound so that my future games will be a lot better than this one. Thank you everyone who played the game, and thank you for reading this post.
