Devlog #7 🐸 – Tadpole Evolution, Relics, and an Evolving Swamp [Playtest v0.6.0]

Welcome back to another Hopfall devlog! Since Playtest v0.5.1, the opening of a run has been rebuilt around tadpole companions that grow into full frogs, while combat, rewards, and the swamp map have received a major balance pass.

What’s New

  • Tadpoles now join the early game and evolve into their full frog forms after three battles.
  • Added more tadpole variants, including Tad Gildfang and Tad Lumina, alongside clearer encounter previews on the map.
  • Relics now provide persistent run effects through events, adding new build-defining choices such as Attack Ward, Battle Trance, Corroding Venom, and Shared Waters.
  • Runs now feature Early, Mid, and Late frog encounter tiers. Elite encounters have been repositioned, enemy progression has been expanded, and Pond Corruption ramps up during prolonged battles.
  • Active frogs earn more bond XP for participating in battle, with progression and rewards better paced across a run.
  • Shops now offer rerolls, map routes have more variety, battle rewards can contain multiple item types, and rare items become more viable later in a run.
  • You can now rename tamed frogs, restart progress from the settings menu, and explore a more guided pond and run tutorial.

Improvements and Fixes

  • Improved frog status feedback, healing previews, role icons, tooltips, item information, map navigation, and combat animations.
  • Resolved issues with map generation, battle state cleanup, tutorials, targeting, taming UI, and the Frog Codex in WebGL builds.

What’s Next

  • More playtesting and balance work.
  • Continued expansion of frog upgrades, events, items, and meaningful team-building decisions.

Thanks for following the development ❤️
