Building the Foundation of a Space RPG Shooter

Hello everyone!

Over the past weeks, I've been working on VoidFront, a 2D Space RPG Shooter developed in Godot. The project has reached an important milestone: it's no longer just a prototype—it has evolved into a fully playable vertical slice.

The primary goal of this stage was to build the core systems that will serve as the foundation for the game's future development.

โš”๏ธ Combat and Progression

One of the first priorities was creating a satisfying gameplay loop:

โ€ข Earn XP

โ€ข Collect Credits

โ€ข Obtain Loot

โ€ข Upgrade your ship

โ€ข Unlock new content

A complete leveling and experience system has now been implemented, allowing players to grow stronger over time while automatically saving their progress.

Every battle directly contributes to the advancement of both the player and their fleet.

๐ŸŽฏ Mission System

VoidFront now features a functional mission system.

Current mission objectives include:

โ€ข Eliminating a specific number of enemies

โ€ข Completing progression-based objectives

โ€ข Earning XP and Credit rewards

These missions form the backbone of player progression and will eventually support the game's story, exploration, and faction systems.

๐Ÿš€ Ships and Customization

Ship progression is a major part of the VoidFront experience.

Players can currently acquire and switch between multiple ships, each with unique stats such as:

โ€ข Shield Capacity

โ€ข Weapon Damage

โ€ข Movement Speed

โ€ข Cargo Capacity

The ship system has been designed with scalability in mind, making it easy to introduce many more ships in future updates.

A modular equipment system has also been implemented.

Current equipment categories include:

Increase offensive capabilities and combat effectiveness.

Improve survivability during combat encounters.

Provide additional defensive and energy-related bonuses.

Allow players to gather resources from asteroid fields.

Each ship features dedicated equipment slots, enabling future expansion with additional gear types and build customization options.

๐Ÿ’Ž Loot and Rewards

Enemies now use dedicated loot tables.

This allows specific enemies to drop unique resources and items, laying the groundwork for:

โ€ข Equipment progression

โ€ข Future legendary rewards

Loot acquisition is becoming an increasingly important part of the game's progression loop.

Mining serves as an alternative PvE activity alongside combat.

Current features include:

โ€ข Dedicated mining inventory management

The first available resource is Prometium, but the system has been built to support a much larger resource economy in future updates.

Space Stations now function as central player hubs.

In future updates, stations will become the center of:

โ€ข Mission management

โ€ข Economic activities

The underlying infrastructure for these systems is already in place.

One of the most important achievements of this version is the implementation of a persistent save system.

The game now stores:

โ€ข Inventory data

This ensures long-term progression and provides a solid foundation for future content additions.

The game also features the first playable sectors and mission chains, establishing the framework for future expansion.
