Update: Phantom Animations, Interactive Tutorial & QoL Improvements

Hanafuda Legends
A downloadable game

Welcome to the latest Hanafuda Legends development update.

We just wrapped up a massive 10-day sprint focused entirely on game feel, audio choreography, visual polish, and onboarding new players. If you've played the game recently, you'll immediately notice the board feels much more alive.

Here is a breakdown of what’s new in this update:

Quality of Life Updates

  • Show Field Toggle: During high-stakes decisions (like choosing between Koi-Koi or Agari) or when reviewing end-of-round scores, players can now temporarily hide the modals to peek at the exact board state. Simple UI toggle, huge strategic value.
  • Milestone Queue: We polished the progression system with a new milestone notification queue. Unlock toasts now wait their turn and respect the game state, ensuring they don't fire over end-of-round modals or interrupt your flow.

Audio Pacing & Game Speed

Pacing and audio got a lot of attention this patch. We've added a dynamic Game Speed multiplier (0.5x - 2.0x) for players who want a faster or more relaxed pace.

More importantly, we hardcoded strict delays between placing a card and revealing the deck. This choreography ensures the "card place" and "deck turn" audio cues never overlap, making the rhythm of the game feel incredibly natural.

Koi-Koi Call Overlay

Calling "Koi-Koi" is the highest tension point in a match, so it needed more impact. We added a full-viewport Lottie animation overlay featuring our mascot, perfectly synced with an ambient audio track. To keep performance tight, the asset is lazy-loaded only when triggered to save bandwidth.

"Phantom Card" Captures

Capturing cards has a lot more weight to it now. We built a new "Phantom Card" animation system so cards physically fly from the board directly to your capture pile. Under the hood, the game measures DOM coordinates to calculate the flight path, falling back to a clean CSS animation if needed.

Fully Scripted Tutorial

Teaching Hanafuda is notoriously difficult. To fix the learning curve, we shipped a fully scripted 3-round tutorial for new players. It uses rigged decks, UI spotlights, and hardcoded AI moves to safely guide players through matching, Yaku, and eventually, risk management.
