Development is moving fast and we're pulling back the curtain on what's been cooking.
Welcome back to another Nightfall Devlog! This one is problematic. Update #1 has been a step forward for the game and today I want to walk you through three of the most exciting things I've been building so far — Quick Slots, the Stone Axe, and Tree Chopping.
Constantly opening the inventory to grab a tool felt slow, so I built a Quick Slot system. A row of slots always visible on screen, assign items from your inventory and select them instantly with number keys (1โ7). Press the same key again to put it away.
The Stone Axe now has a full 3D model that spawns and attaches to the player's hand when equipped. Left-click to swing but only when the inventory, crafting menu, and hand cursor are all inactive. Getting all those conditions to line up was tricky, but it feels clean now.
Probably the most involved feature of this update. Swing your axe at a tree and it plays a shake animation, loses health, and costs you calories for survival has a price. Once the health hits zero, the tree is replaced with a chopped model and stump, and a Log item drops. A Resource Health Bar tracks progress the whole time.
