This week I've been making steady progress on Serumfall, my retro-inspired space shooter. The project continues to grow into something that really reflects my love for classic arcade games and the sci-fi worlds that shaped my imagination. What started as a small experiment in GDevelop has become a full creative outlet for me - one that blends nostalgia, personal passion, and a surprising amount of technical tinkering.
One of the biggest changes lately was in the game itself, but in my tools as well. Since Paint 3D isn't usable on Windows 11 ( still such a shame ), I decide to revive my older laptop and upgrade it to 12GB of RAM. The upgrade wasn't for Paint 3D, it was working perfect with the old 8GB RAM, but I can't deny it has a better functionality when I create the assets in 3D environment. All I can say, is that for the games I like to create Paint 3D does the job. It lets me create both 2D and 3D assets in the simple, intuitive way I've always enjoyed. It's funny how an older machine can become the perfect workstation once you give it a little boost. Alongside that, I've been using the pixel-art editor built directly into GDevelop, which is incredibly handy for quick sprites and retro-style effects.
As for the game itself, Serumfall took shape around the inspirations that made me want to build it in the first place. I've always loved shoot 'em up games like Gradius, R-type, Thunderforce, Pulstar, and Defender, as well as classic movies such as The Last Starfighter. And yeah, back in the days this movie was awesome! There's something timeless about the lone-pilot-against-the-galaxy-vibe, and I'm trying to capture that same energy - fast-action, tight movement, and a sense of flying into danger with purpose. The name Serumfall comes from my fascination with sci-fi themes and mysterious technologies, and it's helping guide the tone of the world I've built.
Every time I add a new enemy pattern or tweak the movement of the player ship, I'm reminded why I love creating. Retro-gaming has always been a part of my life, and making Serumfall feels like giving something back to that era. It's a small game, but it's mine, and I've enjoying every step of the process.
More updates soon as I add gamepad and touch screen support! For now the game is playable on web, PC and if you have a tablet with a keyboard you could play it!
If you like and enjoy play retro-games go on my Retropiq page, and you'll find a few games to play, including Serumfall!
