I took a bit of time off and worked on different things, then looked this over again with semi-fresh eyes.
At first I was thinking of Centipede where there aren't really levels, and your progression is only clear through other things like what's on the screen and your score.
But I have levels in this, so I put in an intermediate screen with stars that flashes when you beat the level, then you also get the level intro that says what country is next.
