Throughout your journey through Abyssal's body, you'll be encountering (and fighting) a variety of monstrous mutants and ghoulish goons. But what are they and why do they look the way they do?
At their core, the monsters you'll fight are aberrations in a very literal sense. Organic and mechanical material corrupted into feral beasts from exposure to Abyssal's necrotic flesh and blood, they are given the names of tumors and other bodily abnormalities to reflect this, typically names relevant to their nature. Acne are small, temporary, and pop. Osteomas attack with a great bone club. Teratomas spawn lesser creatures. At their core, we want these enemies are visceral and frightening, but also cool, even though the oblique POV does not translate details perfectly.
Visually, the design for these monsters was conceived of very early in development. Dark necrotic flesh studded with assimilated machinery is a constant across all enemies to varying degrees, and the relative threat of the foe is determined by color. Cysts, the most basic foes, have light blue eyes and shoot light blue bolts. Acne and inflamed cysts are a sickly green, and are weaker than cysts but make up for this by being able to explode, which can cause incredible damage to a player caught in the blast. Difficult foes, such as the osteoma or teratoma, are a bloody red, and can dish out and take damage in equal measure. Of course, there are enemies that break this mold, such as the mad cattle (which has yet to transform) or the keloid (which is a turret), but these are exceptions.
We've been hard at work on this, even in light of recent events. We hope you enjoy fighting these beasties in Fallen Worlds as much as we've enjoyed making them!
