Astroline
A downloadable game

Hello there!

My name is João Pedro, I'm from Brazil and I'm a game developer. I'm starting this project to learn more about game development, especially some areas that I haven't had contact before. In the meantime, I decided to start this devlog to document the whole process and to gather feedback while the project evolves.

For that, I decided to create a top-down space shooter, called Astroline (the reason behind the name will be explained latter). The main reason derives from the fact that the previous games that I created used other perspectives, and I thought that the challenge would be nice.

This first publication only describes the first steps, basically the project setup, which include:

  • The creation of this itch.io page, where the process will be documented
  • The choice of the game's name
    • As you will be able to see during the course of the development, I'm not good at naming stuff, so I decided to use a random name generator until a space related name appeared. This site came up with the name "Astroline" because of its simplicity.
  • The creation of the GitHub repository
    • You can see all the code of the game on this link.
  • The initial research of the game art
    • Other thing you will be able to tell during the development process is the fact that I don't have any sense of art. This way, I'm going to use, exclusively, free assets available online (and credit the authors when possible).

As I said previously, I want to interact with some technologies that I haven't had the oportunity to before. The main ones I'm interested in are:

  • Shaders
  • Particles
  • Mobile builds
  • Parallax
  • Animations

Well, I hope I can get a nice game in the end and document the whole process in a funny and lightweight way.
