Devlog #2 - map projections and qol updates

Gleba
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

It's been over four weeks since our previous  major release so it's time for some updates! ^-^

Version 0.1.1 brings a lot of minor improvements so for the sake of brevity I'll focus on only the most important changes in this devlog:

  • plate movement imports - previously, user defined imports couldn't control the direction of plate movement, making them very difficult to utilize. Thanks to the feedback from our wonderful community, that's no longer an issue! To control movement of plates, just place two markers on it, one black, one white. The plate will move from the black dot towards the white dot, with the speed depending on the distance between the dots
  • options screen - while its still a placeholder, you can now disable or enable edge scrolling and collider rendering (in the 3d view). Setting it up in a moddable way took some time and I still need to expand it a lot before it's a fully fledged options screen but for now it also lets us select...
  • map projections - Gleba is no longer limited to outputting equirectangular maps alone. Important groundwork was done to create a more extensible map exporter, with Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection, and the Hammer projection joining the potential outputs
  • explicit prompts for save file location when exporting maps - Gleba used to automatically save maps to a default location. Many users found it difficult to locate them so now we instead show a file dialog and let you select where you want the maps to be saved. The old behavior can still be used by shift clicking the buttons

Besides that, a lot of work went into features that aren't clearly visible to the end users. I optimized subtile world topology for lower memory use, fixed a lot of networking issues in the 3d world, fixed some physics bugs, retweaked erosion coefficients, modified some mountain shapes, and started working on world upscaling. That last one hasn't been merged into the main build yet but it's likely going to be my next area of focus as it's very close to being in a satisfactory state already.
