In a game where the goal is global industrial domination, it would be a missed opportunity to incorporate some sort of pollution into the game. This was the goal originally, but the more I thought about it, the more and more types of environmental impacts kept popping up.
So instead of focusing on pollution exclusivly, I decided to create a metric against all buildings are measured.
All buildings either produce or reduce Environmental Impact Units (EIU)
Factories, Farms, Power Plants, they all hurt the environment in some way, and rather than get too specific, I decided to create one all encompassing unit. The more EIU you produce daily, the lower your global perception will go.
The thought process here is that perception isn't going to care if you are pumping CO2 into the atmosphere any more then if you are exhausting Nitrogen, or Methane, or nearly anything else.
If you as a player would like to reduce your Environmental Impact and thus improve your Global Perception you can build one of eight buildings.
Protected Forest: Just a forest. (Can be built on Land (green) or Snow (white) tiles.)
Build cost: 75,000 Maintenance Cost: $10/day Environmental Offset: 100 EIU
Private Conservancy:Just a forest with a maintenance building. (Can be built on Land (green) or Snow (white) tiles.)
Build Cost: $500,000 Maintenance Cost: $100/day Environmental Offset:250 EIU
Wildlife Refuge: A walled in forest with a maintenance building.(Can be built on Land (green) or Snow (white) tiles.)
Build Cost: $3,000,000 Maintenance Cost: $500/day Environmental Offset: 800 EIU
Carbon Sink: A walled in forest of bamboo with a maintenance building.(Can be built on Land (green), Snow (white) tiles, or Desert Tiles.))
Build Cost: $1,200,000 Maintenance Cost: $250/day Environmental Offset: 500 EIU
Seed Bank: A protected building built into a mountain side. (Can be built on Mountain (brown) or Snowy Mountain (gray) tiles.)
Build Cost: $15,000,000 Maintenance Cost: $2,500/day Environmental Offset: 200 EIU
Artificial Coral Reef: A structure built in the ocean that supports marine habitats. (Can only be built in Off-Shore tiles (clear).)
Build Cost: $4,000,000 Maintenance Cost: $150/day Environmental Offset: 800 EIU
Ocean Cleanup Rig: A structure and fleet of ships in the ocean with a mission to clean up ocean garbage. (Can only be built in Off-Shore tiles (clear).)
Build Cost: $35,000,000 Maintenance Cost: $25,000/day Environmental Offset: 10,000
Direct Air Capture: A building that filters air and removes all pollutents. (Can be built on Land (green), Snow (white) tiles, or Desert Tiles.))
Build Cost: $250,000,000 Maintenance Cost: $50,000/day Environmental Offset: 100,000
