photo/tutorial fix

hey, quick post: I got reports about the photo button being broken on mac os, which was also blocking progress in the tutorial. tried my best to fix it, including some additional fallbacks. if it doesn't work again, let me know, I'm definitely selling my stocks and moving out of the country then.
