Hello Everyone,
Long time no update, right? My apologies for the radio silence. Life threw us some curveballs, but rest assured, the project is far from canceled. We did need more time than anticipated to sort out personal changes and secure the funds for the artwork and tools we require.
When Civis and I launched this project, we each put up a large amount of money to get things going, planning that within a year your support would cover ongoing art costs so we wouldn’t keep dipping into our own pockets. Despite your incredible generosity, we never quite hit that funding milestone. We continued to add our own resources, then unexpected family health issues forced us to redirect our personal funds elsewhere (Note: your support goes only into project assets). Deadlines slipped by; every time we tried to catch up, another week or sometimes a month would slip by with little for us to show off. Despite, the fact that we were putting in many hours of our our free time into this.
We decided to make one final push, we even commissioning a professional quality trailer to drum up interest, but in the end we lost money and didn’t reach enough new backers. On top of that, my day job changed! I took on a demanding new role that drained my energy and free time. Civis’s schedule got busier too, though not quite as drastically. Eventually we realized continuing this way wasn’t sustainable, so we hit the pause button so we could rethink our approach.
However, we didn’t want to abandon a story we both put a lot of work into, so after many discussions we settled on a few hard decisions. First, I’ll be stepping down as lead developer. My current job simply doesn’t leave me enough bandwidth. From now on, Civis will be the game’s lead (and sole) developer. But, he's more than ready to take over! I’ll stay involved with the narrative, reviewing and revising story and scene drafts, helping with flow and progression, so I’ll still be here in the places that matter most.
The second issue is stress around keeping a rigid release schedule. Specifically, trying to meet self-imposed deadlines was burning us out fast. To address that, we’re going to put out a poll (soon) and get your input on how to move forward. Here are our main options:
1) End the Patreon campaign. That frees us from update obligations but eliminates financial support, meaning the game would progress more slowly as Civis and I fund art and assets ourselves.
2) Keep Patreon active, with the understanding that updates will drop whenever we can manage them—no firm schedule, but we’ll post as often as possible. However, the worry is this might not be realistic, as many still have set expectations and we don't want to frustrate people. In the end, would there even be enough people around to justify keeping the Patreon going?
But, we want your thoughts! Should we continue under those relaxed terms, or would it be better to close out the campaign and work entirely at our own pace?
On a brighter note, we’ve secured enough funding to kick off Chapter 2 properly. Some artwork is already in hand, though a few pieces need reworking to match recent story tweaks. So despite the setbacks, we are slowly moving forward.
Thank you all for your patience and continued support. We couldn’t have come this far without you, and we’re determined to see this story through to the end.
