Creating this game was my first serious introduction to assembly programming on the Game Boy (I had some assembly experience before this). It was also my first game, ever. I learned so much from making it and thoroughly enjoyed the process, which motivates me to keep learning more about the Game Boy hardware, and pushing it to its limits. Submitting this as part of the GBJam 2025 put me on a fast-track to learning all this, and I was so happy to participate in this event (seriously look through all the games, it is so cool what the community has made). I definitely hope to participate in this jam or another on very soon.
All that being said, I am going to take a break from developing this game for now, and go and learn new things. There is so much to learn about the Game Boy and programming it in assembly! And I figured that instead of iterating on a game over and over until it's perfect, I will try branching out and doing something new (Game Boy Color here I come!).
In the mean time, enjoy the game as is, and don't hesitate to reach out if you enjoy it! I plan to come back to it eventually after I have learned some new skills. At the very least I would take the terrain generation engine and use that in another project. Also, please let me know if anyone manages to get a score higher than 1245 (605 hits and 20 lamps). You can take that as a personal challenge if you'd like :)
