Our team and I love participating in game jams, sharing our passions to our fellow devs and supporting each others to grow into more competent game devs and just in general be in a circle of awesome people.
As a thank you and part of our continuing effort on improving this game, I would like to announce the release of a big update for the game. As Jamsepticeye has not concluded yet, this patch brings no content update, as per the jam rules, but other important features.
I'm a proponent of the belief that gaming is for everybody, so accessibility to the game is important to me. It's somewhat an overlooked feature especially in game jams, since participants are generally more concern with core mechanics and first drafts of ideas, rather than a full-feature game, which is understandable.
However, it also means it somewhat excludes some people from accessing the games that were made because of lack of accessibility features.
I want my games to be able to enjoyed by the most people, so for this update I focused on an important feature, which is configurable controls, for both mouse + keyboard and controller.
This is a standard feature on most commercial released games, but really rarely seen in game jams. This one was quite even more important for me to get right since personally I like to play character-centric games on a controller. Putting them in as default options in the game project settings is easy enough, but to make them re-configurable, which is the accessibility feature, was a challenge on its own. To keep the story short, I almost wanted to had a fight with the UI controls system in the game engine.
As you can see, it's not a perfect system yet:
But it's a start, I'm proud to have put this out and would love to keep continuing to improve it and include it in my future games.
Just in general a better, more pleasing UI experience. I'm still not an UI expert so it may need a lot more tweaking and reiteration, but I hope this makes the game feel nicer to play.
Some extra accessibility and general UI updates:
Another important update I'm pleased to have included is the better map navigation indicators. As a Metroidvania concept, it's generally expected for players to stumble around a bit, but I don't think it's every good to have them just completely lost in the dark, as reported by many players in V1.0.
So by making more signage and other important elements in the game stands out more, I hope it would make the game more enjoyable for everyone.
That's all there is for this update.
Again, as per the jam rules, it brought no new content, just accessibility features to help the game be playable to as many people as possible. I enjoy making this silly game about a mutated fish with Nikes, so I hope you do too, and I hope to keep your continuing support.
Thank you again to everyone that has played, rated, commented and enjoyed the game. It truly does mean a lot to me and my team, and we would love to make more in the future. Till next jam!!
