Possible Coming Features

Pixel Art Cropping Tool
A downloadable tool for Windows and macOS

I have several features on the mind that I'd like to add. But I wanted to release early to get any feedback. That way, hopefully, I can focus on what people would find most helpful.

So please let me know any feedback!

But here are the list of items I'm considering, in case any of these match up with your feedback:

Saving Custom Sizes and Creating Custom Groups

First off is saving custom sizes and making custom groups. The presets should be very convenient but of course people may have their own typical usage. So I want a user to add a size and save it, so they don’t have to re-enter it every time, and also create their own groups so they can make use of the add all button for their typical use case.

Presets

There might be some more presets to add - I haven’t done an Xcode project in a while but I believe there was a lot of icons needed there - and to double check current presets again to make sure nothing is inaccurate or look for anything I missed.

Supporting Images that don't fill the Canvas

Right now, the tool is focused on taking an image that has more content than needed. As in, being okay with cropping off some content. Of course there are many times you want to show the entire image but add space, like a border or frame, instead of cropping off space.

I'm not sure how to support this in a useful way - as in, what would fill the extra space?

Right now, you could load your background or frame first and then your main image as a layer. Another option is to add the border/extra space as part of the piece - as in adding in the extra space in Aseprite (or whatever pixel editor) first. To me, this would make more sense to a workflow than trying to do this in my tool.

Multiple Images

Processing multiple images at once makes sense, but I would like to hear people's needs at first - as in actual use-cases.

Adding multiple source images (not layers) and adding multiple presets - it could get complicated quick, as in the user interface and workflow. Do the multiple images need to use the same preset sizes? Or can you assign different sizes to different images? Set focal point images separately? Have different naming conventions upon export?

In my experience, sometimes giving too many options or trying to be over-flexible can create a really confusing workflow. Therefore at the beginning I wanted to keep it simple in this regard: crop one image for multiple sizes.

Icon Creator

Another feature I’d like to add is creating icons - so ico and icns files. They are slightly more complicated than creating a single image as these file types basically hold an image in multiple sizes. For now I have an Icons Group in the presets to make these images, but to actually create the file you usually need to go to a random website or figure out how to do it in the command line.

There are plenty of icon creating tools, but most do not target pixel art, so hoping this could be a one-click type of process without needing to download your zip from a random website.

MISC Tools & Features

There are also a few other pixel art tools I created - like this pixel art analyzer - and a hero image creator, as I am calling it, that I’ve used to create these hero images for webpages, like on this page. They aren’t exactly related to this tool but since they are already created I don't think it would take much work to add.

A few other options I’m considering - like loading and processing multiple images at once, or loading images that aren’t meant to fill the canvas - I’m waiting to hear feedback from the users - as these could be handled different ways, I am looking to hear what specific needs users have or different requests people make.

Feedback?

So with that, if you do use this tool for your pixel art, please leave me a comment on itch letting me know how you use it, what parts are helpful, and if you have any ideas that would make it more helpful to you!
