Chesst Version 0.3, 2-Week Sprint Project (3/3), 10/1/25

Chesst
A downloadable Chesst for Windows

0.3 is the result of my third two week sprint this summer. Cut a bit short by a fun trip, so 5.5 weeks total.

Major updates:

-   Level 2:

Oh no, the King is in another castle, Level 1 only resulted in freeing a useless pawn (as I write this I just realized it should join your team for level 2, taking that note). Venture into the cold away from the fire as dawn breaks, continuing your adventure! Be wary of the Goblins, and their nefarious Snowmen.

-   Performance upgrades:

Every slime had a point source of light in them before cause I'm dramatic, but I think it was killing GPU performance on non-game ready rigs. Removed those, and removed the glowing effect on the slimes. All this resulted in what seems to be significant GPU gains. I've also cranked up slime speed, so turns should be much faster for most players. This was a common complaint, so I hope this makes turn speeds as fast as originally intended, snappy.

Minor updates:

-   Game Saves.

More things save now! You can quit mid run and it will reset your level, so for level 2 you can quit and reload with your pieces still in tact from level 2. Seems likely something will go wrong here as this shit is as complicated as polyamory.

-   Music Volume Slider

I made it so wrong before, now it actually works as intended.

-   Achievements have been reworked

To better represent my intentions with this I have changed the triggers of the achievements, and gave them cute names. Would love to make them pop up mid run like real games.

Future Content:

-    Level 2  Boss

Obviously the repeat boss in level 2 is a placeholder, but a trip to Chicago on my birthday was too tempting.

-   Another level 1 enemy type

It's lacking a second phase to the level, probably something that moves along the row, as opposed to the slimes running the files. Gonna make shit so wonky, so I will reduce the slime count, which will increase randomization and make planning beyond three turns a real challenge. Onitama vibes (board game, check it out.

-   One more level

One more final hard ass level, culminating in the ultimate fight.

-   More abilities!

As I go I want to constantly add more upgrades and abilities, such as unique pieces that further remove this game from chess, abilities to combine two pieces into a hybrid, and items that can be used to turn the tide of battle (thank you Dylan).

Happy Birthday,

Reid.
