#prototype #announcement
I am excited to share this incremental (I think) game prototype with you all!
Growing up, I used to *LOVE* RTS games. Little did I realize back then, I was more excited to set up troops in formation and let them fight. I wanted to indulge that feeling in myself, but I also wanted to make a game that is fun to play.
Recently I have also been playing quite a few incremental games, and I thought to myself why not combine these two things I enjoy. I decided to make a clicker/incremental game that is also a war/strategy game.
Inspired by one dimensional side scrolling RTS games like Warefare 1917, Stickman Trenches, and Warpips I decided to make a game where you would build units in a similar way, but the progression system would be like an incremental game so that the game can be played while doing something else in parallel.
I experimented with a few ideas and finally ended up with Idle Battalion
The game strips down the traditional strategy game into its core form and then adds incremental layers on top of it.
Currently in this game you are the only attacking side while the enemy just defends their base and only builds a lot of units at the start of each level.
Since publishing this game, a lot of feedback has poured in. I am exploring some of the ideas to see how they feel. One idea is that the enemy needs to attack the player every n-th wave (where n = 2,3,4 or 5). However this needs a little bit more experimentation since I don't want to lose the incremental nature of the game either. A really interesting suggestion was to have the player get relegated to the last level if they are defeated which seems interesting and definitely worth pursuing.
So if you like to play incremental/clicker games or enjoys 1d strategy games like the ones mentioned above and give this game a try. I am taking all suggestions very seriously and actively prototyping to see what feels best. The next update with be a major one, so follow to stay in the loop.
Roadmap for the game
These are the planned features for this game in the near future:
- Figure out a better way of doing progression that involves both attacking and defending in separate waves
- More units with different stats (fast weak smg, heavy lmg, jeeps)
- System to simulate multiple simultaneoy battle on multiple maps with a overworld map to tie them together
- At least 3 types of maps (snow/swamp/sand) that affect different types of units differently
- Unit interaction with map (i.e. some type of units perform better on snow, some on sand etc.)
- Prestige System
- Commander abilities (including targeted kill, focus fire etc)
- Procedural endless mode
