Glow Up Prototype 1

Glow Up
A downloadable game

Welcome to the initial prototype for the tabletop game Glow Up. A game by Alexander Heppner, Jonah Howell, Ella Mack, Tyler McGrew, Tony McNeil, and Cameron Willis.

Overview: Glow Up is a game designed to teach kids about the fashion industry, encouraging creativity while also utilizing sustainability practices such as reuse and recycling as core gameplay mechanics.

Summary of Gameplay Mechanics:  Before starting the game, each player (2-4) gets a miniature mannequin or dummy, three gold stars, a pair of safety scissors, and three square cuts of different colored/patterned cardboard. Each player begins the game by drawing a runway card, which provides a topic or theme to design their mannequin around. The players must read the runway card aloud. Each player will then choose one piece of cardboard to decorate their mannequin with.

The player does not need to utilize the entire piece of cardboard per round. Excess cardboard not used may be used in future rounds. After two minutes, each player presents their designs to the others. Each player will give one gold star to the player they think has the best design. A player can not give a gold star to themselves.

For rounds two and three, the same structure follows, but each player draws a mishap card starting at that round. Mishap cards can set stipulations on other players, as well as allowing players to take or trade materials with other players.

The player with the most gold stars at the end of three rounds wins the game.

First Draft of Rule Sheet:

Glow Up! Rule Sheet

Number of players: 3-4 players

Ages: 5 and up

Game Duration: 15-20 minutes

Goal: Make clothing using cardboard and vote on who has the best look according to the theme!

This Game Includes:

  • 3-4 scissors
  • Tape, glue, or other adhesive
  • A stack of cardboard paper
  • A stack of clothing templates
  • 1 deck of “Runway” cards
  • 1 deck of “Mishap” cards
  • A stack of star tokens
  • 1 timer

Game Setup:

Each player takes a pair of scissors, three different types of cardboard, three star tokens, and any clothing templates they wish to use.

How to Play:

  1. One player draws a “Runway” card and places it face-up in the middle of the group. They will then read the card out loud.
  2. Each player will select a template and a cardboard they wish to use for the round.
  3. Set the timer for three minutes. Once each player is ready, start the timer.
  4. Players will have three minutes to cut out and tape together an outfit that best represents what the “Runway” card says.
  5. Once the timer ends, each player will reveal their outfits to the other players. Each player can talk about their idea at this time.
  6. Each player will then hand a star token to the player they think had the best outfit. They cannot give their star token to themselves. The next round begins.

Rounds after round 1 are different:

  1. After the “Runway” card is read aloud, each player will draw a “Mishap” card.
    1. They can choose not to use it this turn, and may use it on a later turn.
    2. Only one “Mishap” card can be used per player and per round.
  2. When making the outfit, any unused cardboard, as well as cardboard used in the previous outfit, can be used along with the new cardboard.

Winning the Game:

After three rounds, each player will count up the total number of star tokens they have received. The player(s) with the most star tokens win the game.
