Update (v2.5): Core Rules and Safety Tools
- Expanded the section on Safety Tools to include Jay Dragon's "Safety Palette" (used with permission) and several other tools that have been helpful in the play-test game I'm running.
- Added a section on the role of hope in this (admittedly very bleak!) game, responding to some excellent feedback I got from a friend.
- Altered and clarified some of the core resolution mechanics after a playtest. Long story short, two players got into a Challenge with each other that actually worked quite well but also sparked some tensions due to it impacting player agency, and went on a bit long. This helped me reflect both on how we could implement stronger Safety Tools, and that the core mechanics needed changes to better accommodate conflicts between players, as well as with the GM. The rules on re-rolling were also tweaked due to feedback from the playtest.
- I've actually had the unique opportunity to playtest this game as part of the late stages of a campaign, rather than a one-shot, since this is now the... sixth(?) iteration of the rules we've used. So the aforementioned moment was a climactic confrontation between two characters. Which is, honestly, gold in terms of play-testing. I'm so lucky to have such a great group :)
