Hello,
Welcome to the first update on GLIDE in a long while! This post is a preview of the work I'm currently doing for GLIDE - Part Two, a full expansion of the game introducing loads of new content while streamlining the game system for solo players.
Firstly, I'll describe what is changing with the mechanics in the new version of GLIDE.
An action roll uses an Action Die and Challenge Die. This is heavily borrowing from the Ironsworn game system, so you may already know where I'm going with this.
Player's Action Die are ranked from d4 through d10. The Challenge dice are always 2 d10. You'll see why below.
Player's roll their Action Die for the Stat being used, add any modifiers for that stat, and compare it to the 2d10 results. The level of success is measured by the total number of Action Die that exceed beaten by the Challenge Dice. These are ranked as Major (beat 2), Minor (beat 1) and Miss (beat none). The player resolves the action that was being performed based on their level of success. A Major success will provide all bonuses to the player, a Minor success some bonuses and negatives, while the Miss is (usually) all negatives.
That is essentially all there to do for actions at the basic level. Players can quickly decide if they want to participate in the listed action and then they roll to see the results. Simple, clean, and effective solutions for emergent storytelling.
To illustrate how all of this works, I've attached a preview of 50 Settlement Events (of the total 100) that are possible to find in the new edition of the game. I'll break down the first one so that you understand what it is you are looking at.
The "Crowded Bazaar" is the name of the Settlement Event. The line below the event name provides a short description to set the mood.
Next, you'll see the keyword "Test." This indicates that the player can choose to perform an Action Roll for one of the given Stats for that test (you'll also see a couple new stats in the preview document). The line continues by providing a description of what is being done as a way to provide more context to your character's actions.
Below the Test you'll see the possible results from the action roll - Major, Minor, and Miss. These are resolved based on the level of success from the roll, with only one ever being resolved i.e. you cannot resolve a Major and Minor success at the same time as it is not possible to roll both results in a test!
Lastly, you will see other options available to the player, such as the "Spend 10 Credits: +1 Supply" for the Crowded Bazaar. Actions like this are available to do instead of the Test. Think of the all listed option in a Settlement Event as pick one or none, never pick multiple unless specified to (and I don't specify this in the preview).
And... that's it! Compact, informative, and simple to present. Players get the choice of what they want to do, if anything, and resolve it.
My call to action here is presenting this update to collect feedback from GLIDE players, while also giving everyone notice that I am working on a new version of the game. I want to ensure that the thousands of players out there get a chance to voice their opinions on the future of GLIDE, in the hopes that I can improve the quality and accessibility of game for everyone.
Please take some time to download the preview zip attached to this post or from the main page under "GLIDE - Part Two (Preview)" name in the Demos section and give it a glance. I read every comment and consider all responses in my design process!
Lastly, I know that Events were very limited in the original game, which is why I'm including 100 Settlement, 100 Travel, and 100 Encounter events (plus may some other surprises) in GLIDE - Part Two. Events will not always be encountered, they require a 5+ on a d6 roll to appear, so players will have a massive amount of variation in their gameplay from session to session. I want to provide a massive sandbox for players to enjoy while flexing my design skills for what is honestly my most popular game of all - GLIDE.
Thank you for your time and I'll be back soon with more updates.
